On another forum people said 1 was correct. How about 2?
 
Both are correct depending on timing.

3. The person winning the badminton title last year died last month. -- you deemed it incorrect in this previous post.

Is 3 incorrect because 'winning' happened before 'died'?
 
In the second, "who won the badminton tournament" would be correct.
 
Why is 'wanting' in 2 correct but 'winning' in 3 incorrect? They both happened in the past.
 
Wanting refers to the future. Winning refers to the past.
