Hello,

This is my post in this forum . I would like to congratulate all the people that make possible for learners to step in and ask. :)

Well, my question is related to this sentence:

-"Ever since that big company moved to that city, small businesses popped up as a result."

(It is a sentence I made up because I am practising English).

My question is whether or not I could replace "popped up" with "turned up" or "appeared", with no difference in meaning. I also was thinking of "broke out", but I am really not sure.

THANKS IN ADVANCE! :)

You need "have popped up" or (my preference) "have been popping up".
"Turned up" is slightly different. You could use 'appeared'. "Broke out" is definitely not right. That's what riots, war and acne do.

 Individual people or things turn up, loureed4 :)hi:):

Examples:
  • 'Who do you think turned up at the party?'
  • After I'd been searching for weeks, the coin turned up behind the cushion.

I see. Thanks both Raymott and BobK .

It seems that "turn up" is definitely wrong, and "appear" and "pop up" could be suitable.

Would it be possible "show up" for this context?. It seems to me that it has the same nuance as "turn up", therefore, not fitting, but not sure.

THANKS! :)

Yes, 'show up' is like 'turn up' and not really suitable for this.

The metaphor here is often one of plants suddenly appearing, so you could use any of the following verbs in the appropriate tense:

appear
pop up
spring up
mushroom, and so on.

You can use "turn up" or "show up" if you want, but this has more the meaning of arriving rather than emerging.

Thanks both Raymott and Roma55 !! . I really appreciate your helping me.

"spring up" sounds great !! , is it suitable?. Well , I guess it is since you brought it up. :)

You don't need to write a new post to thank us, loureed. The Thanks or Like buttons are for that.
