Your use of "proverbial" was spot on. Please see the slight amendments I made to your post above.
 
You could also say '. . .the proverbial nail in the coffin' (I prefer this version).

Yeah. That's was the part that got tricky for me.

At first, I thought about using two "proverbial", in front of nail and coffin, but that seemed plain silly.
