1) He wants to reduce his nighttime waking in order to go to the restroom.

Is the above sentence correct if the intended meaning is (a)?

a) He wants to reduce the times he wakes up to go to the restroom at night. (He wants to reduce the times he goes to the restroom at night.)

I think #1 means the opposite of what it is supposed to mean. It seems to be saying that in order to go to the restroom at night he wants to reduce his nighttime waking. That is not the intended meaning.

Try:

He wants to reduce the number of times he gets out of bed to go to the bathroom during the night.

Or:

He want to cut down on his night time visits to the bathroom.

I don't think anybody calls it a "restroom" at home.
