Your use of the present participle combined with the simple past is puzzling. He was a famous person while he was in the process of discovering America? But he isn't famous any longer?

You could say: Columbus who discovered America is a famous person.
It's more natural to say: Columbus is famous for discovering America.

PS You should probably say "the New World" or "the Americas".

Hi, thanks,

how about reducing ''who was discovering America '' ?

Columbus, who was discovering America, was a famous person
