Hi guys,

In the winter season schools change their timings. Like if the timing is from 7:30 Am they change it to 8:30 Am. And in the summer they again change it to 7:30 Am. So what should we say for winters "Timings have been brought forward" and for summers "Timings have been taken backwards"?

Say (for example):

The hours have been changed. School will be starting an hour later (or an hour earlier).

Then give details.

Do not say:

Timings have been brought forward (or backwards).

:)

There are many different ways of writing the time. 7:30 Am is not one of them.

The words 'school timing' is not appropriate'.
I suggest 'school hours' or 'school opening hours'.

"Hours" is better.

This is one of the reasons we do daylight time - so people don't have to change the hours of their individual schools or workplaces.

Incidentally, this ...
...And in the summer they again change it to 7:30 ...
... is (barely) OK. It would be much better as 'And in the summer they again change it back [to 7:30]...'

"In the winter season schools change their ..." lacks punctuation and is ambiguous. Do you mean:

- In the winter season, schools change their ...
- In the winter, season schools change their ...

Now, native speakers know that there is no such thing as a "season school" so they are unlikely to read it that way. Non-native speakers don't necessarily know that and could be confused. You needed a comma after "season". In fact, I would suggest that you omit "the" and "season" completely.

In winter, schools change their opening hours.

I think "operating hours" is best. They don't just change the time they open.

No one suggested that. You put it in your first post and the only other person to mention it was Tarheel in post #2, who said "Do not say ... forwards or backwards".

Tufguy, several people have suggested that you use hours (agreeing with me explicitly), and nobody has agreed that you should use timings (agreeing with me by not contradicting me).

Do the rules remain same for offices or other entities?

There are no rules about it — it's just conventional usage.

Offices, medical practices, libraries, banks, police stations, supermarkets and shops have opening hours.
