[Grammar] seek to develop

Is the following sentence acceptable?

During my working at teaching, I have thus been contemplating[FONT=&#26032]：[/FONT]what kind of next generation are we seeking to develop through education?

As an NES but not a teacher, I find the sentence somewhat unnatural.

Personally, I would probably have said something like:

"In the course of [my] teaching [work], I have been considering(/addressing) the skills we are(/should be) trying to develop, in the next generation, through education."
