Is it possible to say:

'We went to war because it was the first time since the Riders fell that we had had even the slightest chance..."

It should be "had had" IMO.

If you listened to much casual conversation, you would wonder if there were any point to most of the rules you ever learnt.
 
Couldn't we just say:

"We went to war because it was the first time since the Riders fell that we had even the slightest chance of overthrowing...
