Some volunteer work, money

Should I use "some" before "volunteer work" and "the money" not "money" in both examples? It's not any kind of particular volunteer work.

1."Now that it's vacations, students want to do (some) volunteer work. They need (the) money for that, though."

2. I want to do (some) volunteer work, but I need (the) money.

Both "some" and "the" are optional.

Note that "Now that it's vacations" is unnatural. Use "Now that the school/college/university vacations have started, ..." or similar.
