I tightened it by a few syllables.

Instead of alcohol, you could also make it more specific booze, whiskey, wine, martinis, whatever.

Last year, when I wanted to write something, I felt awful! I didn't know how to express myself which was really frustrating. Compared with last year, my writing has gotten considerably better. This forum contributed to that progress.

In BrE, "That's the alcohol/booze talking" is the most natural way of saying it. There's definitely no need for "in you".
