The last time I saw Tom was Thursday evening.
The last time I saw Tom was on Thursday evening.

(by me)

I wonder which sentence is correct, the one with the preposition ‘on’, the one without ‘on’ or both.

They're both correct and mean the same to me.

Thanks, Rover.

What about these two sentences? Are they both correct?

Tom’s birthday is October 1st.
Tom’s birthday is on October 1st.

Tom’s birthday is on October 1st.

I don't like the second one. Tom's birthday is not an event that happens on that day—it is that day.

I look at that version as meaning that his birthday is on that day every year! I realise that's kind of patently obvious but ...!
