"The mayor found to embezzle a great sum of money from the city government apologized to his citizens, resigned, ans was put INTO jail." (from my teacher's handout)
Is this sentence correct? If not, how should I revise it? I think "put into jail" is wrong, and it should be changed to "put IN jail". But, I found that there are 7 FREQ that use "put IN jail" in COCA. I am so confused. Thanks!

It's a total mess. "The mayor was convicted of embezzling a large sum of money from the city government. He apologised to the citizens, resigned and was subsequently jailed."

How about this? Is it better now? Are the comma after "mayor" and "government" necessary?

"The mayor, who was found to embezzle a great sum of money from the city government, apologized to his citizens, resigned, ans was put IN jail."

No, it's not better.

Can we say 'After being found to have embezzled a large sum of money from the city government, the mayor apologized to the citizens, resigned and was subsequently jailed'?
