She also died soon after his son, Dorian, was born. Harry became more interested than he had been ever in this beautiful young man, Dorian."

Despite the fact that I haven't read it for over twenty years, I can confidently say that The Picture of Dorian Gray contains many different tenses, not just the simple past.
