Do we use open or opened for a shop when we talk about the past.
Also tell me about whether we use close or closed in a similar situation.

When I went there on Saturday, the shop was open.
When I went there on Saturday, the shop was opened.

The shop was closed that day when I went there .
The shop was close that day when I went there.

The adjectives are open and closed.

Close, pronounced with a hard s like "klohss", is also an adjective. The shop is or was close means the shop is, or was, nearby.

The adjectives are open and closed.

Close, pronounced with a hard s like "klohss", is also an adjective. The shop is or was close means the shop is, or was, nearby.

You mean when we say
The shop was closed. (It means it was shut).
The shop was close. (it was nearby).

Both are correct but they have different meanings.

So we should use
The shop is open.
The shop was open.

"The shop is opened" and "The shop was opened" was grammatically incorrect.

"The shop is/was opened" is not grammatically incorrect but it has a different meaning from "The shop is/was open".

. . . "The shop is opened" and "The shop was opened" was grammatically incorrect.

Opened is a past-tense verb. "The shop is opened" means someone opened it. It implies that either the shop does not usually open its door to the public on Saturday OR that it was a new shop and Saturday was its first day (its opening day).

You want the adjective open. It means doing business with the public.

The shop was close that day when I went there.

This sentence doesn't make much sense in most contexts unless you are talking about a mobile shop- most shops are in the same place every day.

The shop was open. (it was open for business, customers could walk in).
The shop was opened. (the passive voice of somebody opened it)

So both the sentences are grammatically correct but have different meanings. I have got it. Thanks to everyone of you for taking your time to explain. It is very nice of each and everyone of you.

Yes! You understand it perfectly!
