The weather is _________ so we have to wear a lot of clothes.

A. cold enough
B. enough cold
C. warm enough

The given answer is A. This comes from a grade8 English exercisebook written by Chinese English teachers. I thought none of the above is possible for the blank. I thought 'very cold' should be used in the blank. What would you say about this?

I would say: "The weather is cold enough that we have to wear a lot of clothes." Except I wouldn't day that.

You can't leave the blank empty. The sentence wouldn't make sense that way. What would I say? Something like "It's chilly outside. Put your jackets on!"

You're right—the answer is 'very cold', but as that's not an option you're sort of screwed.

More natural would be;

It's cold outside!

The best answer is A because B is ungrammatical and C doesn't make any sense.

Still, A doesn't make a lot of sense, either. It's a very poor question.

I would either replace 'so' with 'that' or just remove 'so'. I guess you could also add 'that' after 'so', but it's my least favorite correction.

Yes, I can only imagine that the test writer wanted to produce this kind of 'consequence' sentence, which would explain the inclusion of the word enough. However, they've failed desperately!

Hi, Rover_KE.
What do you mean by saying "you're sort of screwed" in #3?
