Hello

Which one is correct?

The village is on top of the mountain. The only way to get there is a winding dirt road that snakes up the mountain.

The road doesn't go through the mountain, does it?

You could say the road snakes through the mountains.

You could say the road snakes through the mountains.

So, is this sentence completely okay?

The thing is there are no tunnels on the way. It's a winding road that swirls up towards the village.

No, we're saying it's completely not okay.

No. If you're going to use 'mountain', you need the plural. The road snakes through the mountains - in other words, between them.

For it to snake through the mountain, it would have to be a winding tunnel, as per post #3.

I realize it's a subtle difference and a bit tricky to understand why it means 'between' with the plural, and 'curving inside' with the singular, but hey - English!

Yes. (You already did, didn't you?) We use that word sometimes to describe a winding road. (Like a snake.) Of course, the road itself doesn't really go anywhere.

You could say that road snakes around the mountain.

Yes, or as we've said, through the mountains.

The point we're making, alpacinoutd, is that a road cannot go through a single mountain (unless it's in a tunnel).

Thanks everyone. Just be certain.
