"The fourth day of August, which was Monday, in the year of our salutation 1578, the battle was begun between the two kings about twelve of the clocke." [John Polemon, The Second Part of the Booke of Battailes, Fought in Our Age Taken out of the Best Authors and Writers in Sundrie Languages (London, 1587)]

The Battle of Alcácer Quibir (also known as "Battle of Three Kings") in Morocco in 1578 is mentioned here. What does the emphasized phrase mean?

Are you sure it's not 'the year of our salvation'?

Yes, Piscean, I'm sure. The source: Jerry Brotton, This Orient Isle-Elizabethan England and the Islamic World, p. 82.

Thank you, Piscean, it means that the writer had misquoted the quote.

It could be a scanning error if it's an old ebook.

No, it isn't a scanning error.

Whatever.

It's a mistake.

How do you know?

It's hard to imagine it could have been a misquotation.

Who won the battle? (I read several paragraphs of that stuff, and the writer hadn't gotten around to it before I gave up.)
