Dear teachers

In the sentence "GDP per capita has tripled over the past decade", if the GDP per capital started with $100 ten years ago, so after tripling, should it be $300, that is, up 200% ($100 x 300% = $300, up 200%)?

Yes, triple is "times three." This is more of a math question than a language question. Yes, if something is three times what it once was, it is what it was plus two times that.

A 'by' would make the meaning clearer. Advertisers, keen to emphasize the favours they are doing to an unworthy world, tend to omit it.
