Dear teachers,

Would you tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentences?

“I don’t think you’re going to get anywhere, Doug,” he warned. That man Ribber is a tough egg. He’s a two-time loser. He’s what is known as stir-wise, and he known enough to keep his mouth shut.

a two-time looser = iterated prisoner

stir-wise = an experienced prisoner

He was stir-wise, A tough man to question - he's already been in prison and it was difficult to interrogate.

Thank you for your efforts.

Regards,

V

You´re correct. A two-time loser has been convicted of two felonies. We call him a repeat offender or a recidivist. A stir-wise prisoner "knows all the ropes."
