Hi.

I have extracted below from the book Practical English Usage by Swan.

"We use the present perfect in sentences constructed with this/it/that is the first/second/third/only/best/worst, etc."

Examples below are taken from the book:

"This is the first time that I've heard her sing"
"I am flying to New York tomorrow. It'll be the first time I've travelled by plane."

Once again, such usage is rather new to me.

Assuming that I was in the concert hall when making the remark above, can I use present continuous tense instead?

"This is the first time that I am hearing her sing"
"I am flying to New York tomorrow. It'll be the first time I am travelling by plane."

No. Use the present perfect.

When you cite a source, make sure you include both the title and the author.
