Verb and preposition

Can I say that the composition of a phrasal ver is a verb followed by one or more prepositions? I heard someone saying that a phrasal verb is made of a verb followed by a particle.
Why particle and not preposition?

The little word has been referred to as adverb, particle and preposition. It doesn't really matter what the label is.

One reason we prefer to say 'particle' because it avoids problems of classification.

The British Council says this:

A particle is a word that has a grammatical function but does not fit into the main parts of speech (i.e. noun, verb, adverb).

Wikipedia says this:

In grammar, the term particle (abbreviated ptcl) has a traditional meaning, as a part of speech that cannot be inflected, and a modern meaning, as a function word associated with another word or phrase to impart meaning.

A preposition connects, but with many phrasal verbs, there is no connection. However, I couldn't care less about calling them prepositions.
