Always number sentences when you give us more than one to look at.

With the removal of the unnatural and meaningless "in the above project", they're both grammatically correct. We can't say that one is more "appropriate" than the other. They say the same thing in a slightly different way.
If you need to be specific about the project, I'd suggest doing so at the start of the line. For example:

Project Alpha - As planned, we carried out the work described below last Friday.
