Please look at this sentence written by Maya Angelou:

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.

In my opinion, we can say “it has been through” instead of “it has gone through”. Am I right? If not, why can’t we say that?
 
Your alternative sounds OK to me.
