Do I need to say "I need a blanket because I might cover myself with it while sleeping"? If we are just under a blanket or quilt then do we need to say "We need a blanket to sit under while chit chating"?

You take/bring something with you when you're going somewhere. It's the wrong verb to use in your sentence. You could possibly say you need a blanket to sit under while chit-chatting.
