STAGE MANAGER:

Now we're going to skip a few hours.
But first we want a little more information about the town, kind of a scientific account, you might say.
So I've asked Professor Willard of our State University to sketch in a few details of our past history here.
Is Professor Willard here?
PROFESSOR WILLARD, a rural savant , pince-nez on a wide satin ribbon, enters from the right with some notes in his hand.

(Thornton Wilder, Our Town, Act I)
What do you take want to mean there? Does it mean something like in the sentence She always wanted a large family, or does it mean something like in We'll want more furniture for the new office.

Similar, yes.

It can be read as "We should talk a little more about the town" or "We need a little more information about the town".

The speaker will fill in the gaps in our knowledge, so need makes sense as a meaning.
