“It has been widely assumed that capital would continue to dominate, especially with the potential for technology and artificial intelligence to replace workers in the service sector, just as automation took its toll on manufacturing employment. Throw in the power of multinational corporations and the future for workers was caricatured as something out of George Orwell’s “1984”—“a boot stamping on a human face, forever”.”[from The Economist]

What does "throw in" means?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

It means add to that the power of multinational corporations (as a factor to consider) ...
This "add to that ... and" is a common structure in English.
By the way, you should always cite properly the source of any text you quote. Please give us the link.

So the S+V should be as below?
Subject: the power of multinational corporations and the future for workers
Verb: was caricatured

Thanks for your help. [STRIKE]and[/STRIKE] I have just put the link in the thread.

No.
..............
capital would continue to dominate, ............. Throw in the power of multinational corporations and the future for workers was caricatured as something out of George Orwell’s “1984”
Capital would continue to dominate. If we add to that the power of multinationals, the result is: the future for workers becomes bleak and Orwellian.

Do you get it now?
