I sometimes encounter expressions like below.

John gave Mary what little money he had.

So, is it okay to say, "John gave Mary whatever little money he had"?

The first sentence tells us that John gave Mary all his money, though it was a small amount. The second sentence would be improved if you were to say "John gave Mary whatever money he had." This means that he gave her all his money, but we do not know the amount.
