I read blog posts and lengthy reports on the internet- the word counts can range from a few hundred to several thousand. I certainly don't see any magic number or even range,

It completely depends on who is going to be reading it, and why you are writing it! Exactly like PhilAdams says ^

It depends on the purpose of the essay. Are you writing for a class? In that case, you need to ask your teacher. Are you writing for a publication? Then you need to follow their guidelines. If you are just free writing to express your opinion on a specific subject, you can use as many words as you like. But remember a lot people don't like to read a super lengthy article online. It strains their eyes. Make your point in a concise manner.

However, it s worth bearing in mind that some news sites are posting Long Reads for those that do like a bit of a meaty read. A blanket word length will end up not satisfying many.
