Hi,

Is the following sentence appropriate in an email to a college friend. Is there a better way of conveying the feeling? How would it change if I was writing to a former boss?

Your memory just popped into my head and I thought I would say hello.

Thanks

[STRIKE]Hi[/STRIKE],

I suddenly thought of you and decided to say hello.

That works for a friend or a boss.

I wouldn't use "Your memory" there. It sounds as if a memory that should belong in the other person's head has suddenly entered your head! You could say "A memory of you ...".

A memory of you falling in the canal just popped into my head! How are you doing? (To the college friend.)
A memory of you welcoming me so warmly on my first day in the office just came to me. I really enjoyed working with/for you. How are you? (To the ex-boss.)
