Threads are often in the wrong place- I spend much of my time moving things. That's the nature of the beast, I'm afraid.
When I'm going through the posts in the General Language Discussions forum, I often wonder if the threads there are in the right place. Most of them look like the Ask a Teacher forum would be the perfect place for them. I've been looking at the first page of that forum now and I'm not sure any of these threads couldn't live a happy life someplace else.
What is it actually that that forum is for?

I agree. Would it make sense to combine the two forums and simplify everything by merging the general area into the Ask a Teacher forum?

Why not?
Well, I missed this thread on the first page, which is strange because I'd posted in it. Does it fit anywhere else? I think there must be more such threads in that forum, only they're a minority. Also, this one for example doesn't look like either a general language discussion or a question to a teacher -- more like a general members discussion... There are probably some like this one too.
Those are examples of the original idea- it was supposed to be an area for longer discussions about language topics, but you have a point about whether it works or not.
