Post [ESL Weblog] To "Google"

For many people, Google is synonymous with the web. So much so that the word Google was declared a verb by the Oxford English Dictionary (*) in June 2006. Now it seams that Merriam-Webster (*) have also included it....

In many parts of the US, the brand "Coke" has been synonomous with the generic words "pop" and "soda" for years. Millions of people use "coke" generically in states like Georgia and Mississippi but the isolated, region-specific use of the term seems to have saved Coca-Cola from a Google-type predicament.

The brand protection issue is an interesting one. What if MS suddenly decided that a certain usage of "Windows" was not in their interests?

They can't really do much. I will hoover the carpet regardless of what sort of machine I use. Basically, once a brand becomes a word, it's out of their control. If MS wanted to do something about the term Windows, they have a devil of a job. Anyway, they're probably sick to death of courts at the moment, especially European ones.

It's amazing Vegemite doesn't run into trouble with its brand.

Or they'll go to Linux or great a new distribution for Linux.. woaah that would the worst thing ever, especially for me as an Linux user.. That's a topic I wouldn't think about *argh*

Anyway, it's interesting that soemthing like "google" become a word.

btw: The topic name isn't clear enough, for me it meant to google through the weblog, I though about it and want to post something like how to use google to brose this website for a word.

The topic title is automatic- when a posting is made in one of the blogs on the site, a post is made here.
