    Which sentence do you think is better?¨

    There is an opening for a PhD assistant at the Chair for Commercial Law.

    There is an opening for the position of PhD assistant at the Chair for Commercial Law.

    I would go for the first one, you don't really need "for the position of" with "an opening for".
