The first sentence is correct, meaning that some of the roses are smaller than small coins but some of them are the same size as small coins. Clearly, some of the roses in the garden are bigger than those coins.

I've read #2 bak and forth at least ten times and it still seems to be a perfectly correct sentence.

Some of the roses were bigger than small coins.
Some of the roses were not bigger than small coins.

Could anyone please tell why it's wrong here?
