If we are at the water's edge, we are on the banks of a river, stream, canal etc.

Re: Idiom
In the context, the point with water's edge is that a thing can work up to a point and that point is called water's edge. Is there any phrase that could make it easier for me to translate water's edge into my own language?

Can you provide the sentence?
Could be "breaking point", "last straw", "last drop".

Look up if the word "brinkmanship" is what you've been looking for.

Re: Idiom
The idiom is "politics stops at the water's edge".
See Wiki Answers or Wisegeek.com
It doesn't mean that something works up to a point. Rather, it means that a country should present united voice in international politics regardless of the internal differences within it.

Brinkmanship is something very different. It's a political/military strategy of pushing things to the brink of disaster.
