Why do you use double u in the word vacuum? Is there any more words in English in which double u is used?

That's how it's spelled. Don't ask me why. I am not aware of any other words that have "uu" in them.

Was my question grammatically correct?
Is there any more words in English in which double u is used?
Did I use the verb "is" correctly or should I have used "are"? Also please tell me if we use singular or plural after the word double such as double u or double u's?
