Yesterday, I was rolling my chair further under my desk and my knee caught the side, really hard. It hurt a lot. I didn't look, but there is probably a bruise. I definitely banged my knee.
You bump something softly, and bang something hard.
You can bump into someone and they might spill their coffee. If you bang into someone, you might even knock them off their feet.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
