When you get food caught in your throat and can't breathe, you are choking. You can choke on anything, either unexpected or simply not properly chewed.
Note: choke has one O.
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
And note that in the UK 'potato chips' wouldn't be served at most parties - though potato crisps are. That said, one could choke on a (Br Eng) potato chip, which in Am Eng would be a '[French] fry'.
