(1) I think (repeat: think) that you are 100% correct. I think (think) that the author was somewhat confused about time differences (as are all of us!).
(2) Consider these two terrible examples of mine:
After my airplane had landed at the airport, I looked around for the limousine that was
supposed to be waiting for me, but it wasn't there. So I took a bus into the city. (I
was not about to take a taxi, especially since some drivers have dishonest meters.)
