writing a sentence in another form

Can someone please give me another way to write this sentence :
he would keep “talking around the answer,” in some cases finally hitting upon the correct word or phrase almost by accident.

Can you describe the situation where you would want to say this. It's not clear to me why he'd do this if a single word or phrase is required and he knows that.
