Smile Flat vs Apartment

Hello,

I'm a learner of English and I seem to be missing the difference between 'flat' and 'apartment'. I'm actually under the impression they are the same thing.
Would anyone please explain what is what?

Thanks,

Tina

Wink Re: Flat vs Apartment

A 'flat' is more British than an 'apartment', which is more American. That's it!

I agree with engee30. I would also add that "flat" is sometimes used to describe a type of apartment. For example, flats in San Francisco, CA are characterized by long hallways. A flat is a long, stretched-out apartment.

I hope that makes sense.
