[Grammar] use of "being" in english

could someone tell me about the use of 'being' ?
like I do not understand the use of being in following

ex: How to get over being dumped

In this I did not understand the grammar rule behind the use of 'being'

Please some one help me out

Do you understand about Present Perfect tense?

If so, look at this sentence:

Sue has dumped Paul.

'Sue' is the person doing the 'dumping', so this is Active voice.
What is the sentence if you change it to Passive voice?
Can you do that and post it?

Also,look at this:
I am in hospital.
I was in hospital.

What is this in Present Perfect tense?

How to get over being dumped... this was the original one
apart from this I want to know other use of 'being' except in is/am/are/was/were + being in active passive

ex: How to get over being dumped

1) Passive voice: be (am, are, was, were, or other tenses) + past tense of a verb

eg1. Sue dumped Paul (active voice)

eg2. Paul was dumped by Sue (passive voice)


2) Any verb after a preposition should be changed into the form of gerund, that is preposition + (verb+ing).

gerund =verb+ing

In the phrase of 'get over', 'over' is a preposition, so you have to change 'be' into 'being'.


There's other usage about 'being'. Please make sure you understand what I said above, and then we go further.

I understand whatever you mentioned but I want some more ....like in below example....

it would fully participate with party leaders being part of the group.

You're very welcome. I'd like to mention about another grammatical term- present participle here.

Form of present participle: verb+ing, be+ing

1) A present particple phrase can act as a modifier to qualify a noun or a phrase.

e.g. It would fully participate with party leaders being part of the group

(=party leaders are part of the group)

2) A present participle phrase can act as an adverbial.

eg. Being a human being, I have to sleep and eat.

(the virtual subject is 'I' for the phrase of 'being a human being')

Let's go to gerund.

The form of gerund is exactly same with present participle. Both of them are "verb+ing" or "be+ing". But they are called different grammatical terms according to its function in a sentence.

Actually, any gerund or gerund phrase can act as a noun.

verb/be+ing + (phrase) = a noun ( which can act as as a subject or object in a sentence)

eg1. Reading books is a pleasure for me

eg2. Being a human is better than being an evil.

PS: I'd like to suggest you to study the grammar about participles and gerund, so you'll have a better idea about the usage of "being".
