Default Technical Writing

Hi there everybody,
can u send me tips on how to improve on my writing skills. I have recently shifted from a Marketing job to that of a Technical Writer. What r the things i should concentrate on and what r the sites that i should visit to improve my knowledge on various tools. Also which field should i look forward to work in. Do u feel that i should go for proposal making and the stuff or go for editing of technical manuals.

Please advise.
Thanks

Hi,I often write technical report about equipment,it mainly focus on failure description and new product release etc. Most problem i met in my work is I can't take down some special words and grammar as the foreigner usded to.
so reading the tech report by english speaker is a good way to improve writting ability.

best wish

There are various style manuals which are considered very useful as guidelines for how things are done.

I particularly recommend William Strunk and EB White's "The Elements of Style" which is a slim volume providing excellent guidelines on writing basics.

I counted 18 errors in your short message. A technical writer has to be a concise writer. Here is an example of a technical manual written by a person who probably understood what he was writing about, but could not convey his understanding to the reader of the manual.

"To cancel (undo) any operation - click on "Cancel" button. Note that tag will return to its design at the state if the last "Save". Saved operations cannot be "undo"."

I suggest that you spend some time studying the proper way to write in English. Once you are more comfortable with your writing, you should learn the exacting manner in which technical writing has to be done.

It is probably easier to figure out using the equipment yourself by trial and error than to figure what this sentence (supposedly from a manual) is trying to say.
