Default CV needed?

Moved and have been job searching for the last 3 months. I heard that cover letters were no longer used, so I've been applying for jobs by emailing my resume as an attachment and using the body of the email to thank the HR or recruiter for taking the time to consider my application.

Is this wrong? What's the best way?

That sounds fine to me, though I don't see that much difference between a cover letter and your email body.

Thank you Tdol. I thought a CV was added to emphasize or disclose facts about yourself that are not evident in the resume.

Just steering them towards the CV and letting that do the talking for you seems goods to me; otherwise, it risks becoming repetitious. Mind you, I'm talking from a British background.
