In North America, the standards are:

To Whom It May Concern:
Dear Madam/Sir,
Dear Sir/Madam,

I've seen a number of letters in the last couple of days beginning Dear + Job, which grates.

The first letter to the Human Resources Management Department gives the first impression of you.

Dear Sir, Dear Madam, or Dear HR Manager will start you off on the wrong foot. Such letters usually wind up in the trash.

If you are too lazy to do minimal research on the net or make a simple phone call, then you are too lazy to work for our company.

Think about it! I am insulted when I receive such a letter. I have a name and and any serious applicant can discover it easily.

I have taught this subject for the last 25 years and there is nothing new in being thorough and personable.
