Default Usage of Go the whole hog

Hi,

How will we use this idiom?

"Go the whole hog"

Is this sentence correct?

When John visits me I go the whole hog but he does not asks me even for a glass of water.

Thanks

Like that it's ok, but I wouldn't use that idiom in that situation.

Can you explain the usage of this idiom by giving an example (using it in a sentence)

Here's some money. Now, don't go whole hog at the store.

I disagree that your usage is poor. If you live somewhere where lavish meals in the home are a sign of great hospitality, the phrase fits well. Here, I have generally heard it with reference to spending money.
