I want to know what does "To show somebody the ropes" mean?

It means to show someone how to do something/how things work in a certain situation. For example, somebody may start a new job at your place of work, and you would 'show them the ropes' - you would show them how to do their job, introduce them to the other work, tell them about relevant procedures, etc.
