Default the push and pull of sth.

Hi, everyone!

I was wondering if you could help me with this sentence:

Consumer spending reflects the push and pull of impatience and anxiety.

How am I supposed to understand the idiom "push and pull" in this context? Could you give me a synonym for it?

Thanks a lot!

Possibly, the push (towards those feelings) and pull (away from those feelings).
