"let off hot air" This means this person talks a great deal, exaggerates, or lies, and says next to nothing of any importance but uses a steady stream of words.
"shocked with wonder" To me that means something suprises a person so much that they are awestruck. This is somewhat open to interpretation.
"ran with his like" Similar to the phrase, birds of a feather flock together. People tend to want to be around other people that are like them in various ways. Whether it be larger issues such as race or culture, or other things like a mutual interest in music. To me this phrase has a more negative tone. For example; Josie was a criminal, she ran with her like.
"narrow escape" Usually this refers to situations in which a person avoids a dire consequence by a tiny margin. Example: The car barely missed hitting the girl when it crashed. It was a narrow escape from death.
