Hi,
Please help me express this thought in english using an Idiom.
Recently my cousin had a lavish marriage, they are rich people so they organized a grand party, food was served in silver cutlery, etc etc.
Now I want to say that "the more money you have the more you can spend", in Hindi we have a phrase to express this, "the more the jaggery/sugar the sweeter will be the dish", what will the english equivivalent? How would I express this thought with an English Idiom?
Thanks
It's not very colourful, but we could say 'no expense was spared'.
"If you've got it, flaunt it"?
I'm not a teacher, but I write for a living. Please don't ask me about 2nd conditionals, but I'm a safe bet for what reads well in (American) English.
I think you're right in that there are cultural differences in play here.
In the US, it would be considered somewhat "vulgar" to show how much money you have by spending so much more money than necessary on a party. (We frown on "excess" although we sure seem to like to look at pictures in magazines that show celebrity weddings that cost more than my house. A bit of a conflict between what we say and what we do.![]()
