Hello everyone.
Could you please explain to me the meaning of the saying "have no stomach for smth", like in the context of "I don't have the stomach for that sort of things".
Thanks.
When people get upset, it may bother their stomach. So keeping stress-free helps the stomach to be calm. If a person says they don't "have the stomach for that" it would mean they are not able to handle the stress of the situation or other person.
Other idioms along the same line:
That dress turns my stomach
His mean comment got me right in the stomach.
Thanks susiedqq!
I suspected that was the case but strangely, the meaning that the dictionary gave me was a little bit different than the one you stated above, something along the lines: "I have no stomach for that'' = 'that's not to my taste/liking'', "I don't want to do this"-- without any indication of a stress or that a person is not being able to handle it. That's where I got confused.
So can this idiom have just the I-don't-like-it undertone or not?
It can and does have that too. It is very much the same as I don't have the guts to do that.
